Michael Cochrane has been practising law in Ontario for more than twenty-seven years in both the public and the private sector. He is a partner with Ricketts, Harris LLP in Toronto and was a senior policy lawyer in the Ontario Attorney General’s Office. His practice has an emphasis on family law, estates law, mediation, civil litigation and public policy law. He has appeared before all levels of Court, including the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Divisional Court and the Supreme Court of Canada.
Mr. Cochrane is the host of BNN’s Strictly Legal and has appeared as a legal expert on numerous television and radio programs, including CTV’s Canada AM, Jane Hawtin Live, CBC’s counterSpin, TVO and MoneyTalk.
He is the author of several books, including Surviving Your Divorce: A Guide to Canadian Family Law, now in its fourth edition from Wiley; Surviving Your Parents’ Divorce: A Guide for Young Canadians; For Better or For Worse: The Canadian Guide to Marriage Contracts and Cohabitation Agreements; Class Actions: A Guide to the Class Proceedings Act, and Family Law in Ontario for Lawyers and Law Clerks, published by Canada Law Book, and he was the co-editor of the Annual Review of Civil Litigation, published by Thomson Carswell, from 2001 to 2004. He is also a regular columnist for magazines and newspapers.
In addition to being trained in Negotiation and Advanced Negotiation at Harvard Law School, Mr. Cochrane was a Fellow at the National Association of Attorneys General in Washington D.C. He has lectured in law at the University of Ottawa, Law Faculty, in the areas of Legal Institutions, Property and Wills, at Osgoode Hall Law School in the area of Public Law and at Ryerson University in the area of Environmental Law. He is a frequent speaker on legal issues across Canada.
